Enchanted Makeovers

"I believe everyone needs a place for healing, though we do not always give it a name. As a child, I didn't know that a bedroom was my healing place. My bedroom was a place I went when I was afraid or confused. It was a place of healing for me." — Terry Grahl, Founder & Visionary of Enchanted Makeovers

Terry, Thank you for exceeding all expectations. Being the true visionary that you are sometimes others cannot see in advance how wonderful the outcome will be. The Enchanted Makeover experience has taught me an important lesson. The lesson being; that it’s ok to have faith in the dreams of others. I want to thank you and your team for everything that you all have done. Your organization has been a blessing to our girls. Your gift of love will offer the girls an opportunity to set their expectations for the way they live and think to a higher standard, they can now see before them how wonderful it feels to be loved and to live beautifully. I pray that you continue to “be the change that you see the world needs”. (Mahatma Gandhi) -Many thanks, Samantha Bolling, BSW Manager, Basic Center, Emergency Shelter & TIL Programs Alternatives for Girls Detroit, Mi

The gift of love that Enchanted Makeovers gives to shelters is nothing short of amazing. Several years ago, I was a shelter manager and I know first-hand what a difference a warm and loving environment means to women and children in crisis. Enchanted Makeovers helps shelters create a welcoming space that seems to wrap its arms around you with the message -- "You are important. You are worthy of love and respect. You are safe and with people who care what happens to you." The handmade items made by investors practically shout "Love" and that is something everyone needs. What Enchanted Makeovers does is so much more than just transforming a building. EM gives hope to residents that their journey to rebuild their lives will be successful. Thank you, Terry Grahl and Enchanted Makeovers for making a real difference! All the best to you and EM, Bonnie Pond

I cannot tell you how delighted I am to discover your organization and to make a financial contribution to it! As a mental health counselor who has worked extensively in shelters with homeless children and families, I have felt for years that for all people, beauty in our environments can inspire hope and help us discover our self-worth. Unfortunately, this is rarely the experience of homeless families. Thank you for your important and special work. Mindy Newman MA

I can't begin to tell you how much healing has happened for me taking on this project. I've learned alot about myself and how I want my Art Business to grow and who I am as a person and how important it is for me to give back and pay it forward. Have a wonderful day! Beth xoxoxo

Terry has some special Angels guiding her. People helping and surrounding her are blessed because of it - just my thoughts on the subject. There is a domino effect when someone helps others for all the right reasons - unselfishly. Amazing things happen all around. I am one person who has benefitted greatly from the Journey Terry is on. And, I'm looking forward to the next encounter! Patricia Wallace Travis, Mural Artist

Beautiful, Terry, really beautiful! Bless you for all your hardwork, and the thought and attention to detail (I know I've said it before), but it needs to be said again. You must make such a huge difference to peoples lives, we should all take time to reflect on the messages you are sharing. Gaynor Marshall, Martha Stewart's Dreamers into Doers Member

Testimony from residents at Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, Mifrom theDec. 4th, 2010 Launch Day Event:

Testimony from Investors from Launch Day:

I am blessed to have been a part of this program launch. It's always a beautiful thing to be in the presence of SO much love, but an event like this reaches SO MUCH deeper and lasts SO MUCH longer than the event itself! I know that all of your (our) supporters feel the same, however they contributed. Thank you, Terry, for your direction, leadership, inspiration, facilitation... whatever you want to call it, we all appreciate what you've done and are doiing! Nice job with the video, too!

Investors for NJ Event:

Truly a wonderful and inspiring event. I still haven't come down off the high it gave me. Thank you Terry, and all of you who volunteered and/or donated to do something so special and unforgettable for this group of young women in my community. Jersey City, like many urban areas, is a hard place for young people flourish. The streets here can be so tough with violence escalating so rapidly. Many adults here avoid the young people or pre-judge them. Few reach out to them, embrace them, help or love them. For a team of grown-ups to swoop in and just shower them with love, attention, affection and pampering is invaluable. I was so deeply touched and eternally grateful. This has inspired me to do more and give more.

Tisha Watson ~ New Jersey

Hey Terry, My mind and heart are still processing this amazing weekend. I'm so glad I could be there. You do great work! All my best, Margaret

This event was a great finale for the 2010 EM Beauty & Hope National Tour! What a priviledge to experience this amazing weekend as a volunteer. Jennifer's journaling, the artists, beauty team, volunteers...everyone involved worked together to enrich and empower all of those attending. I hope that the ladies at the York Street Project experienced the same healing I did as a volunteer. A shout out to not only the wonderful speakers, artists & beauty crew, but also to all of the behind the scenes group who gave so much of themselves taking care of the "details". Thanks Terry and EM for caring so much for the hurting, you are an inspiration to us all! Can't wait to watch the transformation thru the eyes of the camera! Mary Richey ~ Ohio

Awesome weekend Terry! Thanks for indulging our interest and letting us be a part of The york Street Project forever with our mural. Like most extraordinary efforts, I think we all got back much more than we could have offered. We made friends for life and were touched and inspired by not only you and your staff, but also the other collaborators and ESPECIALLY the girls of Kenmare HS & York Street Shelter. Keep doing what you do...the ripples will continue to come back!!!! Cre8tive Sisters ~ Laine Discepoli Ohio

Investor Testimony for Texas Event

Dear Superwomen: I wanted to write and let you all know that today's event exceeded my expectations in every way imaginable. I know there were some unexpected challenges thrown into the plan, but from the participant's perspective, you would never know. The excitement conveyed by the women in my little sewing group today reminded me of that first feeling of excitement that I experienced when I finished my first sewing project just a year and a half ago. (Yes, I didn't start sewing until March of 2009.) That feeling of excitement, pride, and fulfillment is what led me to open CityCraft, to give young women in Dallas a place full of fabrics to inspire them and classes to instruct them. Over the last few weeks, I was very stressed out by the huge task of running CityCraft - we are two businesses in one: a full-fledged retail boutique and a full-fledged sewing school. I started to feel run-down and ragged. Today's experience reminded why I got my MBA in entrepreneurship and why I opened CityCraft. We are not supplying fabric or sewing instruction, we are supplying a means to experience that wonderful sense of fulfillment that comes from creating something useful from your own two hands. I can't wait to work with Rosy to develop an ongoing sewing program at Genesis. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of the Enchanted Makeovers experience. If you ever need anything, I will be there no matter what. You can always count on CityCraft to assist in whatever way we are capable. With enormous respect and appreciation, Callie Leary Works City Craft Dallas, Texas www.citycraftonline.com

The work you’re doing is great, so unique and touching at such a basic level. I just learned today that even living on the streets for a week or two is likely to cause mental illness. I’m sure that for many, making connections in these essential areas of self-worth are vital to their mental and emotional recovery. Thanks for your tireless effort. Joshua Foote Social Media Manager at The City Mission Cleveland, Ohio

5/8/10 Hi Terry~ I trust that you are doing well since leaving Cleveland. It was so wonderful to have you and your team of associates here! The two days were well spent and enjoyed by all! So many of the women have shared with me how much they enjoyed being inspired and encouraged by the Inner Beauty workshop. They loved having their pictures taken and had fun expressing their inner selves in the artwork that they added to their framed photos! All in all it was a great time for all! Thanks again, and God bless your ministry! Oh, I almost forgot, last week I toured the director of Beach House Family Shelter from Toledo, Ohio and told her about your ministry and she is very interested in learning more! Blessings, Pam Glicker Manager at Laura's Home Women's Crisis Center Cleveland, Ohio

5/8/10 Terry, I thought it was a wonderful event. It was both fun and inspiring for the women and they were still talking about it the rest of the week. What a great day and great opportunity! I could tell it was a labor of love for you. You planned every detail to the finest degree and worked so hard to make it perfect for the ladies. Thank you for your generous and kind spirit.
Leslie Caplan President/CEO NewHouse Shelter...Kansas City, MO

3/15/10 Hi Terry, Even though I didn’t get to go to the event, I overheard the women talking about how much they enjoyed the event. I agree with Penny, the women seemed joyful when they returned to Newhouse after the event. Terry, it is inspiring to know that there are people like you out there willing to do so much for others!
Thank you, Elizabeth Elizabeth Wheeler, MPA Development Coordinator Newhouse Shelter

3/16/10 Terry, I just wanted to tell you how much you are truly appreciated. The women were overjoyed and very grateful for the days events. The experience for me was as well was very heartwarming and left me with a feeling of gratitude and hope that I may continue my work in the healing of survivors. Your courage is an inspiration to us all. A huge thank you and God Bless you. Lead Advocate--New House Shelter Kansas City, MO

3/10/10 Testimony from women at New House who attended the event: “The event was amazing…the energy was welcoming and positive. The way the doers opened themselves up and shared personal information was unbelievable, in addition to all the donations our residents received… it is definitely having a lasting affect,” said Linda Techell, Program Director of the Parrish House, as she reflected on the event.

Hi Terry! Just wanted to send you a message to tell you how amazing the sisterhood of dreamers are. Everyone of you is to be bless for your giving and kindness. Each and everyone of you are special. I am a staff but I myself was a victim of Domestic Violence and could imagine how each resident is feeling at this time. Knowing that there is someone out there thinking of them and making it your personal mission to make it emotionally better and comfortable for them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sometimes we are doing so much and you reminded me why I'm doing what I do. Thank You again Iris Tirado Residential Specialist Safe Horizon Parrish House 1 & 2 New York N.Y.

Hi Terry, I’m so glad you are pleased with the article, and I’m thrilled at the response you’ve received. Let’s hope that like a stone dropped into a pond, the ripples keep spreading in wider and wider circles. Warmest regards, and best wishes for your continued success. Taryn Phillips-Quinn Research editor Woman's World Magazine

Dear Ms. Grahl: I would like to congratulate you on your success with Enchanted Makeovers and thank you for your passion to use your skills to benefit the homeless. One local issue about which I feel passionately is providing resources for homeless individuals and families. I was happy to read about your work in a recent News Herald article and felt a sense of pride in representing a Senate District in which individuals, such as yourself, give willingly to address a need in our society. Thank you for your hard work on this issue. I wish you continued success in your future endeavors. Sincerely, Raymond E. Basham State Senator 8th District

Dear Terry: As a decorating editor, I'm always happy to find colorful, inspiring projects that we can share with our readers to show how far paint, fabric and some elbow grease can go to transform a room. Further, I am personally impressed by how far you and your collaborators are going to transform people's lives. I am happy that we've been able to share a bit of your story, and hope that it helps to motivate some "copycat" projects around the country. Best wishes, Janet Mowat Managing Editor, Country Almanac

The mission of Enchanted Makeovers is to transform shelters for women and children into heartwarming havens. That is awesome. I’ve seen many of those shelters and they could use Enchanted Makeovers. I’ve also seen how many women that arrive at these shelters don’t stay in them. They are given the resources and education that they need to make the leap out of the cycle of violence. Then many of them turn around and help the women after them trying to get out of trauma. Yes, many women go right back into the violence again and those on the other side have to watch them do it for about seven times and sometimes they die trying, literally. To have to leave your pattern, get off the hamster wheel of repeated trauma, and show up at a shelter to make the plea for help is huge. To actually stay, change your patterns and transform your life is inspiring and entirely possible. To show up at a place that is warm, inviting and lovely to make the changes in – well, that’s priceless. (especially when the women have kids with them!) Angela Shelton

Dear Terry, Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your wonderful EM program. EM gives many of us an avenue to give back and especially for women (young and not so young) who are uplifted by the work of many hands (including men who respect women and want them to be as great as they can be). What a privilege it is to be part of EM. Love, Donajane Lapinski....Team Member

Dear Terry, It was such a pleasure to meet you and be part of the Soroptimist Awards program. You truly have made a difference for women & families. Thank you so much and congratulations! Deb Kennedy (State Representative Twenty-Third District)

"I've noticed an increase in women from the suburbs checking themselves into the one-year program since the makeovers. This is Huge!" Dr. Pam Clark Shelter Director at Grace Centers of Hope

Women's Testimonials:

"When I arrived at Grace Centers, I had nothing but a bathing suit on. When I walked through the forest to get to the dorm I found a quote, a 'sign' that was painted in the forest. When you are down to nothing, God is up to something. This sign gave me hope. I read it everyday; it helped me to survive." Victoria Parks

"I once was in Hell. Now I am in Heaven"

"We used to never sit on the floor. Now the women are sitting down and even sharing their stories."

"When I first arrived at Grace, I was angry. I felt everyone owed me something. I really didn't think I could make it through the program. As I began to walk through the forest, I started to cry. I read all the quotes, and when I arrived at the top landing, I knew I was going to make it." Alice

"I haven't slept in years. Laying in the new dorm has given me peace and comfort. I now need someone to wake me up."

"I feel like I'm living in a dollhouse."

"I now feel I am worthy. I am not what the room used to make me feel like—unworthy, depressed and scared."

"Seeing volunteers arrive at Grace Centers to help transform our bedrooms made me realize [that] I am beautiful. I am worthy!"

Investors Testimonials:

"I was drinking before I began volunteering at Grace. This is a wake-up call. I feel so lucky to be a part of this makeover."

"I'm not a spiritual person, but I believe God has sent me here to forgive my ex-husband and move forward."

"I now have a purpose. I feel there is hope."

"You have given me a reason to get up everyday. I realized it's not always about me."

"Going to bed at midnight, waking up at 5am — I am so excited about life."

"I feel blessed to have the opportunity to volunteer my time to Enchanted Makeovers. I’ve spent much of my life having good intentions of giving of my time, talents and monetary blessings. I came to Enchanted Makeovers while on a journey seeking out my purpose. In giving, I’ve found my purpose. Here’s the thing: when I opened myself up to giving, I broke myself open. Blessing flow out. Blessing flow in. Give. Receive. Turn your intentions into deeds. Let’s do it for each other and ourselves." Kim Lampe The B*A*G Lady

"I started helping non-profits about three years ago after my family experienced a terrible tragedy. We discovered that from something so sad and horrible, something joyous and uplifting can be created. We now see how easily people can become homeless, we empathize more with families that have lost loved ones and we feel confident our volunteering and donating can have a positive impact. All in all, it made me a better and happier person for helping those in need." Jessica Benson Girls, Grapes & Giving

"I am quite emotionally invested in my volunteer work with Enchanted Makeovers. It came at a time in my life when I was feeling particularly low after the loss of my dad and I wasn't coping very well. The volunteer work has brought purpose back into my life again. I'm not a stranger to volunteer work. I was involved many years when my daughter was younger through her school, activities and Scouts. Once those years of volunteer work ended, I was feeling an empty hole in my soul that Enchanted Makeovers has been able to fill. I'm so glad to be on board with this wonderful and unique organization. What inspired me to [help with] Terry's work started with a small article in the newspaper that I cut out and saved knowing that somehow I had to be involved. Having a family member who was a resident at Grace Centers long before Terry started the Makeovers, I knew what a huge challenge she was facing and knew that she had to be one remarkable woman to stand up to the challenge when so many before her had failed on their promises of help and hope. I am grateful that I read that article and chose to take action. It has been a real blessing for me to be able to give back in whatever ways I am able to for so many precious women and children." Mary Stanczyk

Dear Terry, One of my goals in life is to "be on purpose" every day. Working with you has given my an opportunity to do that by being your "pickup/delivery angel". I'm not only doing something good, but I also meet all the "angels" who are donating items to your projects. In addition, when I work on the final details of the projects, I see in person the people who you are helping to give them hope, boosting their self esteem, and they have a beautiful place to live. I can't wait to begin working on your next project for Vista Maria. Thanks for allowing me to be part of your team. Donajane Lapinski

"Volunteering for the Grace Center of Hope Project was exciting on many levels. First, I presented a proposal and was able to secure a grant from the Western Wayne County Branch of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Then, my team of girlfriends supplemented funds through coupons and sales to purchase lovely, brand-new pajamas in all styles, colors and sizes. At Catherines, a specialty store for larger women, customers and clerks were so excited to hear about the project, they offered coupons and discounts to help. To make a nice display, the pajamas were then sorted by size and tied with ribbons. It was a joy to work with friends and share the excitement of choosing beautiful things for someone else. We eagerly anticipated the big reveal and the sharing of our gifts. Part two was working at Grace Centers of Hope on the Reveal day. Here, I discovered Terry’s contagious energy, excitement, and the power of a vision. I spent the day ironing curtains and bed linens with other caring women who volunteered to serve their community. I enjoyed meeting so many talented artists, creative decorators, and the dedicated Christian people who run Grace Centers of Hope. It was inspiring to meet all those new and positive people and to be part of a huge project. I enjoyed watching small children leap in excitement to see hand-painted murals in their rooms, and bright colors and flowers painted in the halls. Some of the women thanked me, hugged me, and danced with excitement, so touched by the fact that strangers took the time, and donated so much to make their rooms inspiring and beautiful. They spoke of how depressing and run down the center felt before, and how the new rooms made them feel important, worthy of nice things, and gave them hope that they too could dream and make it happen. My final part in the project was to help the women choose pajamas, slippers, tote bags and gifts for themselves. At first, many of the women were tentative, asking, 'Is this for me?' However, once they had permission to 'shop,' their excitement was contagious. Several plus-sized women asked, 'I don’t suppose there's anything in our size, is there?' I was elated to point to a table filled with pajamas, just for them. I laughed at the squeals of joy when one gal snagged a jazzy set in 3X. No one was left out, and everyone had something new and special. Jesus said, 'Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.' (Luke 6:38a NIV). And I can attest to that. I truly received a blessing from giving my time and energy to help with this project." Shelly Bahr

Vista Maria Makeover-Investors Testimonies

Terry, I thank you for Fred and I getting a little taste of the hope and love you are providing to these women and children. To see the tears of joy, smiles, and hear the laughter of these children was a blessing. Things I take for granted, make all the difference in what you are doing for these women and children. We look forward to being a bigger part of your great adventure. My favorite was the young girl making angels (snow angels) on her new rug in her room. There was so much done to the room, and she just loved having a rug. Little things. Eileen Klotzer

I recently had the privilege of seeing the impact of one of Enchanted Makeovers' transformations firsthand at Vista Maria. It was such a blessing to watch the girls as they explored their new dorm with the madeover rooms and all the beautiful handmade gifts. Some of them had tears streaming down their faces. Most of these girls haven't experienced much love in their lives. Being part of that project was an incredible ex`erience. Terry's work is impacting numerous lives. Kristi.....West Bloomfield

Terry, Vista Maria was an amazing experience. To see those girls happy and grateful was the BEST payment for all the hours of work. You're doing great things, and I'm proud to know you, my friend! Sue Herman Koons

Well I finally made it back to Iowa at 3:30 PM on Sunday-what a great 11 days. To finally meet you and your family was great-I feel like I have a new circle of friends in Michigan. It felt great to connect with your Mom-she if full of energy and fun-my kind of lady. In regard to the Makeover and my response to it-I must say the feeling I had must be compared to a retreat movement Norm and I have been involved with since 1979 called Cursillo. The feeling I had when the girls were revealed the completed makeover was comparable to the feeling I felt on my first Cursillo weekend when you enter the chapel-the lights are off and the room is filled with hundreds of people singing softly and holding lighted candles and as a candidate you walk pass every person and end up around the altar in a circle of love with fellow candidates and members of the Cursillo Weekend team members. It was like a touch of heaven on earth-that was the feeling in my heart and soul as the big reveal at the Vista Maria-Vision House on Saturday-November a15th. Have a great Thanksgiving-we have so much to be thankful for. Thanks, Jan Walter (IA)

Vista Maria Staff: Angels (and Fairies!) Among Us For the past couple of months, Terry Grahl and her group of dedicated volunteers have been working on transforming the rooms in our Myriam House into enchanted havens for the girls residing there. This past Sunday, the project was completed and the girls’ rooms were revealed. Volunteers and staff were moved to tears of joy as the girls saw their rooms for the first time. When I went to see the makeover on Monday, I was lucky enough to have one of the girls as my tour guide. She was so excited. “Ms. Becky,” she said, “I almost started crying when I walked into my room. I couldn’t believe all of this is for me!” She then proceeded to show me her basket of yarn for crocheting, the jewelry box with earrings and other jewelry inside of it, her new pajamas, slippers, rug, bedding and rocking chair. My friends, one of the greatest things about working at Vista Maria is when I see how volunteers and supporters, like you, make the girls feel like they are worthy of spectacular things. You and I both know that they are more than worthy of greatness, but when they realize it for themselves, it is a very special thing. Thank you SO MUCH to Terry and all the volunteers at Enchanted Makeovers for doing this special project for our girls. Becky Herman

“Many of these girls haven’t experienced much love in their lives, so this project means so much to them,” said Amy Adamson, Myriam House dorm supervisor.“I’m so amazed with what Terry through Enchanted Makeovers and her team of volunteers has been able to accomplish! We expected a fresh coat of paint and maybe some new curtains—but the makeover has far surpassed anything I could have dreamed. I have no doubt that it will go a long way toward giving the girls hope and inspiring them to reach their potential.” Amy Adamson....Unit Manager for Myriam House, Vista Maria
