Enchanted Makeovers to Make a Difference at Safe Horizon in New York City
TAYLOR, MI — Terry Grahl, founder and president of Enchanted Makeovers, is heading to the Safe Horizon shelter in New York City in January as part of The Sisterhood of Dreamers into Doers Event NYC. The event will include more than 40 women from around the U.S.—all part of the Dreamers into Doers group at MarthaStewart.com (a women’s forum)—who are joining together to bring a message of hope and love to residents of the New York City shelter for victims of domestic violence. Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is opening its studios to the women for the one-day event.
The event is being coordinated by Grahl along with Rachel Gaffney of Rachel Gaffney's Authentic Irish Goods in Dallas and Jolene Macks, owner of Quite the Stir Bed and Breakfast in Gettysburg, Pa., with assistance from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. “Many of the women on the Dreamers into Doers forum have developed a friendship through sharing ideas and inspiration on the forum over the past year,” Grahl says. “In November, I pitched an idea to the group about combining our talents to make a difference at a shelter. The response was overwhelming.”
Several of the women in the group are from New York, so the group decided to focus on a shelter in New York City. Grahl said she chose Safe Horizon because of the shelter’s emphasis on providing a refuge to victims of domestic violence. “I know women who have been affected by domestic violence, so Safe Horizon’s mission strikes a personal chord for me,” she says. “By sharing our time and our talents with the women and children at the shelter, we are showing them that we care and that they are worthy of love and beauty.”
The Sisterhood of Dreamers into Doers Event NYC will take place on Tuesday, January 19, and will consist of volunteers decorating the Martha Stewart Show studios for the event; preparing and hosting a gourmet meal complete with pastries, cookies and other fine foods; and sharing music and stories. Practical and decorative items will be given to the shelter along with personal gifts for all shelter residents.
Inspirational signs and artwork for the rooms and living areas as well as some personal gifts have already been donated. Enchanted Makeovers is seeking additional new or handcrafted items or funding to purchase needed items such as pillows, blankets and quilts for the shelter beds; towels and wash cloths; personal care items; hats and mittens in children’s and adult sizes; and books and magazines. All donations are being coordinated through Enchanted Makeovers.
