Doer of the Week
Wednesday, August 12, 2009
In January 2007, Terry Grahl's life was changed by a polka-dotted pillow. An interior designer, Terry was asked to help decorate a women's shelter in Pontiac, Michigan, that was in dire need of refurbishment. Terry wasn't sure if she could undertake such a vast project until she spotted a dotted pillow inside the shelter. She saw the polka dots as a safe pattern without sharp edges, and she took it as a sign that she should accept the challenge.

Six months later, Terry and a team of volunteers completed the job. By January 2009, she had converted her design business into Terry's Enchanted Makeovers, a nonprofit organization that transforms women's shelters into places of peace and possibilities. Her group also supplies shelters with heartfelt items, such as handmade cards, and offers consulting to folks who want to assist their local shelters.

Terry Grahl is an entrant in the 2009 Dreamers into Doers contest and part of our Doer of the Week newsletter series, which highlights interesting and diverse contestants. Doers of the Week are not necessarily finalists in the contest.
"My mother taught me that decorating didn't need to be motivated by money and that by relying on your own creativity and vision, each home improvement was a selfless act of love," says Terry Grahl, founder and president of Enchanted Makeovers.
