White House Garden will grow locally

With the help of volunteers and supplies donated by English Gardens and the Scotts Company, the 20 residents at Myriam House at Vista Maria, a home for abused girls in Dearborn, will plant Michelle Obama's White House Garden this summer.

Homestyle will follow the progress of these gardeners, ages 11 to 17, and share what they've learned with other novice gardeners.

The garden is part of a makeover project for Myriam House organized by Terry Grahl of Enchanted Makeovers, a nonprofit organization that transforms the institutional décor of shelters for women and children into home-like spaces.

Grahl said the harvest from the garden will be part of the menu at Myriam House and will be featured at its Cooking Event, a special luncheon for residents on June 25.

"I feel they're planting hope," Grahl said. "This is more than just food. It's therapy."
